Chapter 6

Mark waited on the veranda at the side of the pub until Leah came out; she was smiling when she joined him and he pushed away the little tug of jealousy that surfaced. He had no right to be jealous of another man’s interest in Leah Maclean.

“Right to go?” he asked.

“I am. Joe’s car is unlocked. I just have to get my bag out of it.”

“You’re trusting. You weren’t worried about it being stolen?”

“It hasn’t been unlocked all night. He just clicked the remote so I could get my stuff.” Leah opened the passenger door and reached over to the floor and pulled out a small handbag and a padded cooler bag.

Mark held out his hand for the cooler. “Let me carry that for you.”

“It’s not heavy.”

“I insist.”

She passed it to him with that delicate shrug of her shoulders Mark had become used to when they worked together. They walked two blocks towards the main street and then Leah indicated that they turn left. As they walked towards the next corner, voices and laughter reached them from a shop that was lit up with Christmas lights around the large window.

“Looks like there’s a Christmas party at the Cyprus Café too,” Leah said. “We turn right here and Fig Tree Lodge is on the next corner.”

After they turned into the next street, they left the noise behind them and the street was deserted.

“It’s very quiet here, isn’t it?” he commented, stating the obvious and immediately feeling silly. His brain went to mush when Leah was around him.

“It’s a quiet town,” she replied. “It’s what I liked about it when I lived here. It’s all I could think of when I decided to come back, and in two days it hasn’t disappointed me. But you watch this time next Saturday night, the Christmas carols will be on, and people will come from far and wide. I remember them when I was growing up. Everyone brings a picnic rug or a camp chair and listens to the carols. This year the school band’s going to play. Josie, a young friend of mine, is playing the triangle and she’s really excited. You will come, won’t you?”

“That’s a week away, Leah. I don’t know that I’ll even be in town.”

“But you said you weren’t going home for Christmas. Where else will you go?”

He hesitated. “I don’t know yet.” Mark didn’t know if he could spend a week in Leah’s company without telling her how he felt, and he wasn’t prepared to embarrass himself.

“Well, I think you should stay in Bindarra Creek, although you might get sick of sleeping in a swag on damp ground. Have you got a groundsheet? There’s been a lot of rain lately. The river’s higher than I’ve ever seen it in all the years I lived here.”

“I have.”

“Good.”

“And I’ll think about staying. Who knows? We might still be searching for the mistletoe. But I won’t promise about the Christmas carols. You know what a Scrooge I am.”

“Well, it’s up to me to show you the joy that can be found in Christmas.
